How GPA works in Pakistan (HEC grading system)
Most Pakistani universities follow the Higher Education Commission (HEC) grading framework. Your marks in each course are turned into a letter grade and grade points on a 4.0 scale, and your GPA is the credit-hour-weighted average of those grade points.
Under the widely used HEC scale, 85% and above is an A (4.0), 80–84% is an A- (3.67), 75–79% is a B+ (3.33) and 71–74% is a B (3.0). The pass mark is usually 50%, which is a D (1.0). The full table is below.
Universities are free to adjust the bands. NUST, LUMS, FAST, COMSATS, UET and Punjab University each publish their own table, and some use relative grading, where grades are curved against the class. If your university's table differs, check your result card and adjust the marks you enter.
How to calculate GPA from marks
Three steps: convert marks to grade points, weight them by credit hours, then divide by total credit hours.
GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ Credit Hours
- Look up each course's grade points from its marks using the HEC scale below (for example, 78% → 3.33).
- Multiply the grade points by the course's credit hours to get quality points.
- Add up all quality points and divide by total credit hours. For CGPA, do the same across every semester.

Some universities round grade points to one decimal (3.7, 3.3, 2.7…) or use slightly different bands. Your university's published table always takes priority.
Why your GPA matters in Pakistan
Most Pakistani universities require a CGPA of at least 2.0 to stay in good standing, and many put students on probation below that. Distinctions and gold medals usually start around 3.5.
Scholarships such as HEC need-based and overseas scholarships, Fulbright, Chevening, DAAD and MEXT ask for your CGPA, and many set 3.0 as a practical minimum. Graduate programmes abroad usually accept an HEC 4.0 CGPA as it is.

For example, 86% (4.0) in a 3-credit course and 78% (3.33) in a 4-credit course gives (12 + 13.32) ÷ 7 = 3.62 GPA. The calculator above does the conversion for you: just enter marks and credit hours.

All three use the HEC 4.0 scale, but the percentage-to-grade mapping differs in the details. NUST uses absolute grading with fixed percentage brackets. LUMS uses relative grading (curving) for most courses, so the same percentage might map to different grades depending on class performance. FAST mixes both approaches across departments. Always check the latest academic handbook for your specific university.
Most Pakistani universities require a minimum CGPA of 2.0 to remain in good academic standing. Drop below 2.0 and you typically go on academic probation. Drop below 1.5 and you risk being asked to leave the programme. Honours graduation usually begins at 3.5, and a CGPA of 3.0+ is the common cut-off for HEC and Fulbright scholarship eligibility.
