How to Convert GPA for Italian Scholarships

Italy uses grading scales that look nothing like a 4.0 GPA: exams are marked out of 30, and final degrees out of 110. When you apply for Italian scholarships, you may be asked to report your grades in one of these formats, or the university may convert them for you. This guide explains both scales, shows reliable conversion formulas with examples, and highlights a rule many international students miss: for some scholarships, credits matter more than grades.

  • 18 is the minimum pass
  • 30 is the maximum
  • 30 e lode (30 with honors) is reserved for outstanding work
Italian GradeWhat It Means
30 e lodeOutstanding
27–30Excellent
24–26Good
21–23Satisfactory
18–20Sufficient

The 110-Point Degree Scale

Your final degree mark combines your exam average with your thesis. 66 is the minimum, 110 is the maximum, and 110 e lode is the highest honor. A result of 100 or above is generally considered excellent.

How to Convert Your GPA

The most widely used method for estimation is a linear conversion. It maps your scale's passing-to-maximum range onto Italy's range.

To the 30 Scale

Italian Grade = 18 + (Your Grade − Min Pass) × 12 ÷ (Max − Min Pass)

Example: A 3.20 CGPA on a 4.0 scale where the minimum degree pass is 2.0:

  • 18 + (3.20 − 2.0) × 12 ÷ 2.0
  • 18 + 1.2 × 6
  • 25.2 out of 30

To the 110 Scale

Italian Mark = 66 + (Your Grade − Min Pass) × 44 ÷ (Max − Min Pass)

Same student:

  • 66 + 1.2 × 22 = 92.4 out of 110

Example with Percentages

For a 72% average where the pass mark is 50%:

  • 30 scale: 18 + (72 − 50) × 12 ÷ 50 = 23.3
  • 110 scale: 66 + (72 − 50) × 44 ÷ 50 = 85.4

Which Italian Scholarships Use Your Grades?

University Merit Scholarships

Many universities offer Italian scholarships to international students in the form of fee waivers or merit awards. These often use your converted average or the university's own evaluation of your transcript. Some ask you to enter grades in an online form that applies its own conversion.

Italian Government Scholarships

Calls from Italy's Ministry of Foreign Affairs typically ask for academic records and language skills. Requirements change each year, so read the current call carefully.

Regional DSU Scholarships

This is the point many applicants miss. Regional "right to study" (DSU) scholarships are mainly need-based, assessed on economic condition. For first-year students, grades are usually not the deciding factor.

To keep the scholarship in later years, you must usually earn a minimum number of ECTS credits by set dates. Students who pass exams with high marks but too few credits can lose funding.

Pro tip: If you hold a DSU scholarship, plan your exam sessions around the credit deadline first, then aim for strong grades. Missing the credit target can mean repaying money already received.

Tips for Reporting Your Grades

  • State your original grade and scale alongside any conversion.
  • Use your degree's overall minimum pass, not a single course pass mark.
  • If the portal converts for you, enter your grades exactly as on your transcript.
  • Keep a short note explaining the formula you used, in case you're asked.

Full Example: Converting a Transcript Course by Course

Converting your overall CGPA is quick, but some Italian portals ask for each exam. Here is a short example using a 4.0 scale with a 2.0 minimum degree pass, converted to the 30 scale and weighted by credits:

CourseGrade (4.0)CreditsItalian GradeWeighted
Statistics3.67328.084.0
Economics3.33326.078.0
Accounting3.00324.072.0
Marketing4.00230.060.0
Total11294.0

Weighted Italian average = 294 ÷ 11 = 26.7 out of 30

Each grade uses the formula 18 + (Grade − 2.0) × 12 ÷ 2.0. For example, 3.67 becomes 18 + 1.67 × 6 = 28.0.

Understanding the Economic Side of DSU Awards

For regional DSU scholarships, your family's economic situation is usually assessed through an indicator known as the ISEE. International students typically need a version for foreign income and assets, often called the ISEE parificato, prepared through approved centres using documents from your home country.

This process can take weeks because documents may need translation and legalisation. If you plan to apply for need-based Italian scholarships, start collecting income and property documents early, at the same time as your university application.

Tips for Each Type of Award

Award TypeWhat Matters Most
University merit scholarshipConverted grades, sometimes test scores
Government scholarshipsAcademic record, language skills, study plan
Regional DSU scholarshipEconomic condition first, then credits for renewal

Common Questions About Credits

Italian universities measure workload in CFU, which correspond to ECTS credits. A full year usually carries about 60 CFU. When DSU renewal rules set a credit target, they refer to CFU earned by a deadline, so plan your exam sessions so that you pass enough courses in time.

Knowing both the grading scales and the credit rules lets you plan for Italian scholarships with far fewer surprises.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Converting with a simple ratio, such as 3.2 ÷ 4 × 30 = 24, which ignores the passing range
  • Mixing up the 30 scale (exams) with the 110 scale (degrees)
  • Assuming every Italian scholarship is merit-based
  • Ignoring credit requirements for renewal

Final Expert Tip

Treat conversion as a planning tool, not a final answer. Calculate your estimated Italian grades so you can target suitable Italian scholarships, then let each university or agency apply its own official method. If you hold a need-based award, track your credits as carefully as your grades.
